Rubén Sierra

Founding Artistic Director of the Seattle Group Theatre, Rubén directed the company’s inaugural production of Short Eyes in 1978. Over his 15 years of association with The Group, Rubén directed many plays including the world premier of Idioglassia, (made into the film Nell), Kiss of the Spider Woman, Division Street, The Last Carnival and Lesson from Aloes. As an actor he appeared in Steambath,Primary English Class, How I Got The Story, Talking With, Strange Snow and The Fifth Sun. He has appeared in and/or directed numerous productions in Seattle theatres, as well as the L.A. Public Theatre, South Coast Rep and La Compania de Albuquerque. As an educator he was on the faculties of the University of Washington, Portland State University and The California Institute for the Arts.
 

Sierra’s play I am Celso appeared at the New York Public Theatre. Others include La Raza Pura, or Racial Racial, Manolo, The Millionaire y el Pobrecito, Articus and the Angel, Voices of Christmas, and Say, Can You See? When the Blues Chase Up a Rabbit was Rubén’s final play, which he saw produced at the Miracle Theatre Group in Portland, Oregon, before he died from pancreatic cancer in the fall of 1999.
